Identified SynCREs can mediate pathogen-responsive expression in mature Arabidopsis plants. Five week-old Arabidopsis transgenic plants carrying the indicated SynE expression constructs were challenged with the oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis isolate Emwa (A and B) and expression of the LUC reporter gene was monitored and compared to unchallenged control plants (C and D). Images were taken 6 hours upon application of H. arabidopsidis spores. The temporal dynamics of LUC activity under H. arabidopsidis challenge can be viewed in Additional files 9 and 10.
