Hypothetical model of PAG1 and BR regulation of cotton drought tolerance. PAG1 inhibits endogenous BRs, which promotes ABA accumulation. ABA regulates stomata closure and stress tolerance genes to enhance drought tolerance. BRs regulate auxin polar transport to promote primary and lateral root development and, in turn, enhance drought tolerance. BRs also affect drought tolerance by regulating other stress tolerance genes (ABA independent genes), stomata density and photosynthesis
