Verification of RNA-sequencing results using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assays. Forty-two differentially expressed genes were selected from the carotenoid, chlorophyll, and theanine biosynthesis pathways. Scatter diagrams show the correlations of the log ratios (log2 fold-change) of the unigene expression levels as measured by qRT-PCR and RNA-sequencing. The qRT-PCR data were normalized using the ‘housekeeping’ gene GAPDH. The qRT-PCR primers are listed in Additional file 6
